Welcome to Beware of Creepy Houses: 31 Days of Spooky, where I’ll be celebrating Spooky Season with my thoughts on books, podcasts, films and spooky activities to get you in the mood this Halloween season.
There will also be a free writing prompt every day to get your spooky creativity flowing, which you can use to build a collection of 31 flashes, begin 31 short stories or stitch together into a great big spooky novel. Or maybe some poetry. Whatever floats your spooky spirit!
It’s Halloweek!
Time for final decisions on your costume(s)… If you’ve got it, haunt it!
The Frighteners
All due credit to Tony for reminding me of this little classic.
Michael J. Fox stars as paranormal investigator, Frank Bannister. Of course, everyone in his small town community thinks he’s a conman and, well, they’re sort of right… But also, he’s the real deal. It’s complicated. And it’s about to get a whole lot more so.
This small town community has been invaded by a series of inexplicable heart attacks. Local law enforcement are actually willing to work with Frank, but the Feds are involved and they’re not so keen on the idea.
Add new local doc, Lucy, and her jock husband, Ray, plus an extra creepy house inhabited by a bizarre mother and daughter, and you have a really fun horror comedy that’s perfect for Spooky Season.
Just don’t back into a corner in fear. You can’t trust the wallpaper.
Wild Deodorant Ghost Case
I love Wild deodorant and this limited edition Halloween special ghost case is so cute! It looks like they’ve improved the overall design of the case as well.
Wild cases are made from sustainable aluminium and refillable with a range of vegan and cruelty free scents made with natural ingredients.
And, every time you buy from Wild, you help grow the forest through their partnership with ONAMISSION. So far Wild have planted over 445,994 trees and counting!
A journey into witchcraft beliefs
This fascinating interview covers the history of the origins of witchcraft, beginning with curses cast in Ancient Greece.
We also learn about the impact of folklore on early Christian communities in Britain, particularly in relation to ancient monuments built into the landscape of our land. The close links between such monuments and witches’ familiars and the fae are far more intricate than one might imagine.
And of course, Matthew Hopkins the witchfinder makes an appearance.
Derry Halloween
Until 31 October, Europe’s biggest Halloween Festival is back in Derry where the spirit of Samhain is welcome at this unique festival!
Today’s Halloween will collide with history in a dazzling street celebration of all things spooky.
The Awakening the Walled City Trail will teach you why the folklore, history and heritage of Derry makes it a special place to celebrate Halloween. History is brought to life through lights, aerial performances, pyrotechnics and music, bringing magic and mischief to the streets.
Writing prompt - Think about it
If you have haunted wallpaper, can a decorator solve the problem for you?
I’d love to see anything you write over 31 Days of Spooky and hear about anything you are doing to celebrate Spooky Season!
Sending tricks and treats and terrifying toiletries,
Donna
